Potty Training
Yorkie and Biewer Puppies
Congratulations on your purchase of your
Fiesta puppy!
We started your puppy's potty training by using potty pads. We train our puppies in a room that allows the pups to be able to see the pads all the time. Basically, if the pads are out of site…the yorkies or Biewers will not think about using them.
The key to success is the timing of IN and OUT. Young yorkies and Biewers take IN food or water and usually within 15 or 20 minutes, they pee or poop OUT.
At this point, you might want to ask…so who is being trained? Watch the clock…after 15 – 20 minutes it is your job to be ready for that OUT moment.
Since you cannot watch the clock all the time, here are some suggestions.
- Be prepared for a "whoopsie". . .(When she does pee or poop in a bad area, quietly clean it up in a matter-of-fact way. This isn't a time to talk either loving or annoyed talk to her; essentially ignore her while you do the cleanup. Certainly never yell or physically punish him in any way.)
- Set a timer for the OUT
- Visit the OUT area before and in the morning and evening.
- At night time, if your yorkie or Biewer wakes you up by whimpering, licking your face, tugging at your clothing…take her for an OUT break.
Puppy Potty Training Suggestions:
- Consistently use the same word to refer to doing OUT business. Use a word with only one or two syllables. (OUT, potty, outside, tinkle, sprinkle, etc.)
- Take the yorkie or Biewer puppy to the same spot. She will recognize the “aroma” and want to freshen it up a bit by adding more pee or poo.
- Sometimes it’s easier to attach a harness and leash to the puppy. Then attach the leash to your waist or belt. This way you can always see your precious puppy. It will be easy to watch for signs of needing to use the restroom.
- Remember: You are building a relationship with your yorkie or Biewer. They are learning to trust you. Be patient, loving, but firm with your potty training.
- Potty training your yorkie or Biewer puppy isn’t always fun. You are waiting for the puppy to go, in whatever your climate can arrange and at all times of day or night.
- Wait a few minutes after she eliminates. A puppy is smart. She will probably notice going outside with her master ends abruptly once the OUT is out.
